What Are Standard Window Curtain Sizes? As a society, we are all guilty of spending more time than necessary in our bedrooms. It’s where we go to sleep and get dressed, so it is natural that this room would be the most frequented space in the house.
In an effort to improve your bedroom experience as much as possible, let’s talk about curtains.
Curtains do not need to be fancy or expensive- they just need to serve their purpose well!
The standard bedroom curtain can have a variety of purposes from blocking out light during those early morning hours when you’re trying to sleep in on weekends, adding color and personality to a dull white wall, or even acting as a decorative piece for a windowless wall.
If you don’t want anything too extravagant but still want something.
Do you know Standard Window Curtain Sizes?
Standard curtains come in three different lengths. These are 84 inches, 96 inches, or 108 inches. Curtains with a length of 84 are not good for low ceiling spaces. Curtains with a 96-inch length are good for people who have high ceilings.
is a staple in most houses. You can find them in many different styles, colors, and fabrics which makes it practically impossible not to fit any room with one. They offer privacy and shield your nudity from the guests staying over when you have to get out of bed during the night or early in the morning.
There’s a common problem associated with curtains though.
When you need to get out of bed during the night and you turn on the lights, everybody else in your house or hotel room does too! That includes people who aren’t even in your bedroom, such as those sleeping in the living room or an adjacent bedroom. It can be annoying if you’re trying to sleep, especially early in the morning when others are still dozing off.
You can solve this problem by using a black-out curtain. Black-out curtains typically come with thicker and heavier material than your standard curtain, and they do a better job of blocking light from passing through them.
They also often come with grommets on the top so you can easily open and close them by sliding an opening left or right.
Of course, you could always install blackout curtains in your bedroom to solve the problem once and for all, but if you’re renting a room or staying at a hotel it’s not really practical to make permanent changes to the fixtures there.
Plus blackout curtains are expensive, especially if you want heavy-duty ones that block out as much light as possible.
What other options do you have?
Here are a few:
- Invest in a blackout curtain – This does an excellent job of blocking out light, provides privacy, and enables you to get out of bed without dimming any lights or waking up anybody else who’s sleeping in the next room over.
- Use a black-out panel – These attach to your curtain rod and hang directly on top of your regular curtain, and they do a good job of blocking out light as well. The only problem is that they’re not as thick as blackout curtains which means the fabric doesn’t block as much light from passing through them as blackout drapes do. Also, if you have a very sunny room these won’t be able to keep it completely dark so you’ll have to resort to option #1 or #2 instead.
- Just stick with a regular curtain – If nighttime privacy isn’t an issue for you then you can just stick with a regular curtain and sleep in darkness.
If you don’t want to invest in a blackout curtain but still value your privacy and the darkness of your bedroom, there’s a very cheap trick that’ll solve both problems.
Most people have old cell phones lying around these days, so what you can do is put your phone in a plastic bag or wrap it up in aluminum foil to block out any light from the screen when it’s turned on.
Of course, this won’t fix the problem completely since there are other ways for outside light to get into your room such as ambient lights from street lamps or passing cars, not to mention natural sunlight when morning comes.
For that reason, we strongly recommend getting a proper blackout curtain if possible.

What length should bedroom curtains be?
Curtain lengths are determined by the type of window treatment (blinds, shades, or curtains), the décor, and whether they will be opening or closing a room.
If your windows have valance, scalloped tops, embroidered details, or layers of trim, you’ll want to measure from the top of the curtain down to where you want them to fall on your rod.
For blinds and shades, add an extra inch or two for light control and privacy.
You can contact us for more options if you need help choosing window treatments that best fit your style.
How to measure for curtains and window treatments:
When you’re shopping online, keep in mind that most window treatments will require a certain amount of leeway when measuring.
If you have 14-foot ceilings but want an 8-inch curtain valance, the curtain panel will be slightly shorter than the stated length.
Also, add two inches to your measurements for prefabricated options such as wooden blinds and shades.
To give yourself more flexibility with placement on your rod or in your room, add another inch or so to each measurement—if we know we can help you find what you need in just about any size!
Keep these tips and tricks in mind when shopping online and follow our guide on how to measure for curtains below.
How to measure for curtains:
Measure the width of your windows using a measuring tape. Be sure to measure inside the frame so you don’t include any molding in your measurement.
Make note of the final number then divide it by two, this will ensure that both panels are even on each side of your window. Get started now with our guide on how to measure curtains!
*Be sure to double-check your measurements against the width of each curtain panel. We allow an additional 1/2-inch tolerance in length and width but do not accept returns due to incorrect measurements.

Curtain panels are typically 40-inches wide with a 63-inch drop or 52-inches wide with a 72-inch drop.
Draperies are typically sold as width-to-length proportionate, meaning that a 52-inch wide drape requires a 72-inch drop. This is because curtains and draperies look more proportional when mounted at the same height as the window sill.
Draperies shorter than 48 inches have an uneven look, so these sizes are not recommended for most applications. We also recommend keeping all sidelight draperies at least 2 1/2 inches from sidewalls to avoid unsightly folds or creases in your curtain panels.
The style design allows you to roll back curtain tops for a contemporary look that gives you maximum light.
Café d’Lite™ standard lengths: 26″ and 36″.
Available in cream, white, and black. These panels pair well with our Lightweight Poly Duvets and Sheer Poly Duvet Covers.
Standard length is 84″, 108″ or 120″, available in 16 colors including the popular Hunter Green color.
Pleated draperies are known for their timeless elegance and can provide an upscale look to any bedroom design. The pleats on these drapes open up the curtain panel so your windows appear larger than they really are.
What kind of curtains goes in a bedroom?
When choosing bedroom curtains, start with what material you want. Cotton is the most common choice. It is light and easy to care for. But if you want more of a luxury feel, choose something more luxurious.
Everyone has already been in the situation of wanting to redecorate a room, struggling with this small detail. The curtains or blinds are often an afterthought or last on our list when it comes to making a decision.
Yet it’s quite possible that they may end up being one of the most important elements in your bedroom, depending on what you want from them.
Actually, the type of curtain you chose for your bedroom will not only set them apart from other rooms in your house but also affect their acoustics and insulation, so before rushing into choosing a product you should ask yourself ‘what do I want from my bedroom curtains?’
In order to answer this question well, we have compiled some tips for you which should be taken into consideration before buying ‘curtains for bedroom’ online.
What Are Standard Window Curtain Sizes?
What is the height of your window?
To start with you should measure the height of your windows and compare them to the size and length of curtains or blinds you wish to purchase.
You can find a good range in sizes on Homelux, but if you need any other measurements we’d be happy to help!
The height measurement will help determine whether you can use an open-fronted curtain track or not (if this is what you’re looking for, see our article about different types of curtain tracks) as well as looking at standard lengths such as 63cm/25″, etc.
If your window is shorter than 58cm it may be worth considering a roman blind as opposed to curtains.
What mood do you want to set?
Next, think about what sort of atmosphere you want to create in your bedroom and choose accordingly.
Darker colors tend to make a room feel more intimate and cozy, whilst lighter pastel shades can add an airy feeling and brighter colors such as red or yellow add an energetic vibe.
You may wish to consider adding another feature such as a feature wall or painting the room, which could tie in with your chosen color scheme.
Alternatively, if you prefer just one color to dominate go ahead! There’s no right or wrong choice so long as it’s a color you love.

What type of curtains would suit your room?
We’ve already written about the differences between various types of curtain styles, but for bedroom purposes, this consideration is particularly important as it can affect sound insulation and may make the room appear bigger or smaller depending on what sort of finish you go for.
In terms of acoustics, blackout blinds or roman blinds are great at blocking out unwanted noise from outside as well as helping you maintain those essential beauty sleep hours!
However, if you’re not looking for any soundproofing just a decorative valance will look fine too.
What’s more, many people prefer to hang one pair of curtains higher than the other for a more balanced look in their bedroom, in which case you may need to choose curtains with different drop lengths.
The right length of curtain has the power to make or break your room
You can find many styles of curtains at Homelux including blackout styles, sheer styles, and heavier weight materials such as velvet fabrics. Simply choose matching finishes if buying more than one set of curtains for maximum effect.
For example, when choosing the color of your fabric you could opt for different colors within the same color family (such as cream or white) but select two slightly contrasting tones which will be visually pleasing when hung together.
Alternatively, think about adding an interesting detail such as piping around the edge or matching fringes on your curtains, blinds, or roman blinds for a complete look. For more tips like these try our free lifestyle guides.

Has your window for curtains already? Do you use them regularly?
The reason this is important is if the previous owner used to treat their thick velvet drapes with kid gloves but you plan on letting your cats play with little Johnny in the room all day every day then it might be worth taking the time to ask yourself whether your existing curtains are fit for purpose before purchasing replacements just yet.
There’s nothing worse than spending lots of money on new curtains only to find they’re ruined by sunlight or that they fray away at the bottom after a few months.
In terms of how often you use your curtains for privacy or aesthetics, if you have a young baby who is likely to wake up at random times throughout the night it might be worth buying blackout curtains as opposed to sheer as this will ensure as much sleep as possible!
In these instances consider buying secondhand so that even if they’re not in perfect condition they’ll provide you with some extra hours of beauty sleep before going back on the market.
If you’re looking instead for bedroom decorating ideas that won’t disrupt your beauty sleep then take a look at our guides on how to remove creases from flat sheets and cotton pillowcases without an iron, both of which are great for those mornings when rushing out the door.
What color scheme would work best in your bedroom?
If you’re looking for cheap curtains to complement your existing decor, go ahead and pick anything. However, if you’re currently stuck for inspiration then there are a number of ways to achieve the perfect look depending on what you already have in your room.
For example, if you’ve gone with nothing but white walls then an easy way to tie everything together will be to select linen or cotton neutral-colored fabrics which will blend seamlessly into any color scheme.

Blackout curtains for bedroom windows
Blackout curtains for bedroom windows can allow you to sleep with the lights on.
I’m not talking about the heavy blackout curtains that reduce incoming light; I’m talking about making your bedroom into a world where it is always nighttime. You might think that turning all of the lights off would be enough, but it’s not!
Even the tiniest bit of light will create an aura around itself in your vision, which disrupts your nightly darkness ritual. The very best way to achieve this is by using blackout curtains for bedroom windows to block out light completely. Here are some helpful tips on how to do that:
Blackout curtains for bedroom windows should be thick enough to block out light completely.
– The thicker the fabric, the better it works. I recommend buying blackout curtains for bedroom windows that are at least 3 or 4 inches thick.
– Double up on the layers by hanging two sets of curtains next to each other instead of just one. This creates an added layer of darkness which helps prevent any lingering aura effects around objects in your room.
Blackout curtains for bedroom windows should have quality stitching and construction so they don’t rip easily.

Bonus tip: you should also not pull too hard on your blackout curtains for bedroom windows.
Always use care when opening & closing them! This is true with all window treatments, but especially true with thicker fabrics like these because if you snag or tear them, you’ll be in trouble.
Use the rings on your curtain rod to open and close your curtains. This is an easy way to avoid ruining the fabric by pulling too hard on it!
Blackout curtains for bedroom windows should go all the way down to the floor (or wall).
– You want these blackout curtains for bedroom windows to cover any windows that face out into other buildings because even small leaks of light will get through no matter how thick your blackout curtain is; this means covering your window with two layers of blackout curtains for the bedroom windows if necessary.
The Floor-length Blackout Curtains are a good option in this case, but I recommend measuring your windows before buying so you can have peace of mind when placing an order.
– If your windows face a public sidewalk or a street lamp, you might also want to consider attaching some blackout curtains for bedroom windows to the walls on either side of your window so that light cannot leak in from outside.
This is especially helpful if you live in an apartment and have no control over what’s on the other side of your windows.
Conclusion
The standard bedroom curtain is often overlooked and not given the attention it deserves. A lot of people believe that their bedrooms are finished with a simple blind or sheers, but this isn’t true.
Curtains can be used to accomplish many things in your room like adding color, blocking out light (for those who want to sleep), creating privacy for changing clothes, or even drawing an aesthetic design on the wall behind them which you may find appealing if they’re ornate enough.
There’s also additional fabric at the top of curtains which creates another layer between our eyes and what’s happening outside – giving us some peace from all of life’s distractions here inside our own personal world.
