What is Standard Mudroom Bench Height?
A mudroom bench is a crucial piece of furniture for any home. It provides seating and storage space, making it the most often used room in your house.
Standard mudroom bench height
Ideally, a mudroom bench should have a height of 18 inches. As for the width, mudroom benches come in various widths, but the most common width is 36 to 48 inches. Lastly, this piece of furniture has a depth of around 14 to 17 inches.
Keep in mind that a mudroom bench is also used as a storage space
The standard mudroom bench height is 30 inches. That equals 914mm.
A mudroom bench height is an average height that most people sit in when using or working on a bench in their home or workplace.
Standard kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom furniture comes in various heights to accommodate all members of the family, but to save money many manufacturers just use standard measurements for everything.
This causes problems for anyone who doesn’t fit into this “standard” sizing age group though. Sitting in certain positions can be uncomfortable at best and even result in prolonged health problems if done too often over too long a period of time.
For instance, to stop yourself from slouching at your desk you’ll need to raise your monitor above eye level which means it will likely end up further away from you than usual. In an already small-sized room, this will create a problem as your monitor or laptop won’t be able to have its normal viewing distance from the screen.
In addition to those with shorter legs, tall people may find that there isn’t enough legroom and they end up sitting closer to their desk than usual causing back problems later on.
Even if tall people do buy furniture at standard height – it’s likely that over time they’ll start slouching below the bench anyway if they’re constantly having to crane their neck at awkward angles trying to see what’s on the screen.
If, for whatever reason, you already have furniture that is at the standard height and you are not able to adjust it – consider getting a standing or adjustable computer workstation.
For those people who are buying new equipment anyway, you should know that 30″ = 914mm which is about average for having under desk storage space available.
We can help bring together your entire office with our range of home office furniture packages which offer plenty of under desk storage space as well as desks to accommodate different heights.

Standard mudroom bench dimensions
Standard mudroom bench dimensions are around 24 inches deep by 42-46 inches wide. The standard bench height is 17 to 18 inches. Mudroom benches are made of many wood types, including pine, poplar, maple, oak, and mahogany. This can help you determine the price range for your chosen mudroom bench.
The average cost for a mudroom bench ranges from $250-$400 but prices may go up depending on size, wood type, and quality of construction.
When you consider that most mudrooms are located near an entranceway where guests will be removing their shoes it is important for the bench seat to have a durable surface that cleans easily. If there are children in your home who also use the bench it should be sturdy enough to support their weight as well as the weight of their belongings.
A standard configuration has two symmetrical legs at each end with cross members bracing them apart. This gives added stability while sitting on the bench or standing next to it while putting on or taking off boots or other items. A slatted design, which is common for mudroom benches, provides air circulation to maintain the natural wood finish by reducing moisture content that could lead to warping or cracking.
When choosing a bench consider where it will be located and how you will use it.
Does the size of the bench allow enough room for people standing to put on shoes? Is there adequate space next to the bench so they are not bumping into walls or other furniture while getting ready? Will an adult sit comfortably on this type of bench?
If children will also be using it, does it have protective railings along both sides and at each end so they don’t hurt themselves if they fall off? You might want to purchase something with storage underneath in case you need a place to store shoes or other items.
You can buy mudroom benches that are already built or order them as kits and build them yourself. If you want to build your own bench, you’ll need to select a straight-grained wood such as pine or poplar and cut the pieces for the frame.
You can then attach either moldings or decorative inlays that will add value and beauty to your finished product.

Considerations when choosing mudroom bench
The mudroom bench is a very important element in the foyer.
From there we initiate the first contact with the outer world, leaving us to exit with our coat and boots, gloves, and scarf; that is why this space must be well prepared and equipped. To begin with, you need to know that it should be located close to exterior doorways: if possible on both sides of them.
It has to have ample storage capacity but keeps it organized for ease of use. It has no backs or armrests so that items are easily placed on top of it.
The legs are visible underneath.
The best materials are wood, stainless steel, or granite stone slabs mounted on metal frames even combining these materials at the same time.
This bench not only serves to store outdoor clothing but also as a place to sit down and put our shoes on. It has multiple functions so it is important that its design be functional too.
Vertical or wall storage benches are other options for mudrooms; they can be made of glass with stainless steel frames, wood, leather, or laminate finishes.
A practical solution for small spaces
One option would be to use an interior door mounted on rollers as the top of the bench where you could store all items that you wouldn’t want to be scratched by your daily wear (coats, hats, scarves). Its width should allow at least two persons to pass each other without impediment.
Its cabinet space must be close by even if it is located under the bench: you will need to reach for it and make sure that your children know where items should be placed and used orderly.
The mudroom bench can be a useful element in small areas; measure well the dimensions of its entrance and place it one step out of line with respect to said entry.
The interior door can accommodate drawers, baskets, or shelves where outdoor clothing is put away before entering into the rest of the house.
At least two cabinets (one per side) are desirable; their functions could also include storage for shoes, boots, backpacks, etc.
A square table with drawers built into its base can fulfill many purposes in this space like having room for an umbrella, making keys, or placing wallets when coming in from work before going into the rest of the home.
Keep in mind that when designing a house or apartment choose wisely what is necessary and practical.
Keep in mind your needs before choosing a mudroom bench so you can have one that is functional, comfortable, and fits in its space perfectly.
Below we will show some examples of benches in front of exterior doors to help you in case you need inspiration.
Note that these models are different between them
However, they all have their space for storage and in some cases extra elements like coat racks or key holders.
1) This elegant bench has iron frames with a bronze finish, has a marble countertop, and hidden storage behind the seat where items can be stored. It is perfect for entryways due to its size that allows the passage of more than one person at the same time. The small wall lamp above it works as an accent element in this entrance area also thanks to its vibrant color.
2) A simple white finish makes this bench a versatile option in any decor; we can also notice a custom coat rack and plenty of storage space for jackets or boots. If you need to, it has room for an umbrella too.
3) This bench is made of wood and glass. The wall behind it has built-in cabinets, wicker baskets, and room for the family.

What size should mudroom lockers be?
Width is how wide your locker is. Depth is how deep it is. Lockers need to be deep enough to hold all of the things that go in them, like coats and backpacks. A good depth for a locker is 18 inches.
The size of the locker can affect its functionality, so think about your needs before choosing a unit. If you only plan to store coats and small items in your locker, go for one with smaller dimensions.
However, if you need lots of storage space, look for larger lockers that will meet your needs. For example, some hanging lockers allow up to three dozen hangers or more on each door.
This lets you use them for bulky items instead of having to deal with multiple separate units.
How many mudroom lockers do I need?
It’s important to consider how much you want to store when picking out the right number of lockers for your home or business.
Allow at least 5 linear feet per person if you plan to use the lockers for coats and jackets, or about 2 feet per person if you’re only storing small items. This will allow most people to keep their belongings in one locker while still leaving space in the room for other uses.
Do I need to hire a professional?
Most mudroom lockers are easy to assemble yourself at home when following package instructions, but some can be tricky depending on their design.
If you need help assembling your new storage solution when it arrives, consider hiring a contractor or handyman for an hour or two. Some retailers even offer installation services upon request with your purchase.

How difficult is assembly?
Most types of mudroom lockers have minimal assembly when they arrive at your home or business. You’ll just need to put the base in place, insert items into compartments and doors, and then install hinges on each side.
This usually involves using a screwdriver to attach screws where they go in the door latch, handle, and sides of the locker. Some lockers are designed with an open-box design that requires no tools at all for assembly.
What are split lockers?
Split lockers are similar to standard mudroom lockers except they have multiple compartments per door instead of one main compartment.
These split doors prevent you from having to access individual compartments by removing coats or other items if someone has filled up their section of storage space. It also lets more people use one locker, which can be important in facilities where people share space for coats, jackets, and other items.
What kind of materials should be used for a mudroom bench?
Materials to build a bench for a mudroom or entrance hall should give the bench durability, wear-resistance, and ease of maintenance. The material should not absorb water.
A foyer bench can be made from many materials including metal, plastic resin, wood, stone, tile, marble, or other natural materials.
The most popular benches are made of solid oak, which is naturally resistant to moisture.
The color of oak can be stained in different colors depending on the type of protection used.
It provides a very good quality finish because it is easy to work with tools. Oak also has an excellent weight/size ratio that makes it compatible with any kind of door frame construction.
More popular today are metal surfaces combined with painted wood or aluminum plates. These materials are excellent for cleaning.
Stones, tiles, and marbles give unlimited possibilities in terms of shapes, colors, and patterns.
They also do not rot, but they require greater care than metal or wood.
The surface should be sealed to protect it from water damage. Good quality stone surfaces can last for generations with proper maintenance.
Tile is another excellent material for making benches.
However, ceramic tile has a porous type, so sealing the whole must be done after finishing the installation. This process takes time and money as well as professional knowledge to achieve satisfactory results that harm neither floor nor wall finish.

How do I add a mudroom to my house?
This is a common question we receive from homeowners, and it makes complete sense. Mudrooms are great space-savers that give you a dedicated area to take your shoes off before stepping into the main house.
They also serve as an entryway for both your family and any visitors coming over. It can be hard to know where and how best to place one of these fun little spaces in your own home – we will walk you through each step so you can design the mudroom of your dreams!
You don’t want to get halfway into building your new mudroom then realize it has no entrance or exits!
Drawing out a floor plan or layout ahead of time ensures you account for all doors, windows, and other rooms that may be near your new mudroom.
No two mudrooms are alike!
While some homeowners choose to use their mudroom as an entryway, others make it more of a space-saver to place shoes or bulky coats. Ask yourself what you want out of your new addition before moving forward with any construction plans. If this is going to serve as both a mudroom and an entryway, it may be best to consider adding large double doors instead of regular single ones.
You will also want to keep in mind how many people will be entering and exiting the room.
Draw out your mudroom on a sheet of paper, using the floor plan you drew up earlier as a guide.
Draw it to scale, including any doors or windows that may limit where you can place the walls of your new mudroom. You also need to make sure all dimensions are accurate, as you don’t want to cut pieces too small! Make note of any measurements that seem inaccurate as well – having a frame come together with its back wall off by 5cm can throw everything off balance.
Decide on a design ahead of time, even if you are just considering adding a mudroom to your house.
Start by choosing an interior style or theme for your new addition. You also need to take into consideration the size and shape of the space you have available – narrow floor plans will require an L-shaped layout so it can fit in without wasting too much space. If you have plenty of room, consider expanding the footprint of your mudroom with some additional square footage!

Will your mudroom be L-shaped, U-shaped, or straight?
This step largely depends on how big/small your room is and where its doors or windows are. Keep in mind that you want your mudroom to be large enough so people will actually use it, but also try to do some math and figure out how much square footage you can afford to lose when adding the new structure.
Don’t forget about the options of double doors or cabinets either – they both serve great purposes!
Whether you’re adding on a mudroom for your family or creating an entryway for potential homebuyers, it’s important to carefully consider every aspect of its design before getting started on construction!
You definitely don’t want half-finished walls with no back, but there are plenty of creative ways you can make the space function properly while still maintaining an aesthetic appeal.

Before we get started with the tutorial, let’s define what a mudroom is exactly!
A mudroom is a small entryway or room where all wet or dirty items are removed before entering the main house. The word ‘mud’ comes from its use during Victorian times – since rubber boots were likely to be covered in mud after going out into the rain, people would remove them here before going inside. This meant that their floors and carpets didn’t have to be dirtied by these types of shoes and boots.
These days it serves as a place where people can drop off any wet coats/jackets, shoes, and back.

What do you put in a mudroom?
- Cubbies or shelving. …
- Shoe storage areas. …
- Hooks. …
- Floor mats or rugs. …
- Seating area. …
- Washer, dryer, and laundry baskets. …
- Clothing hangers and shoe racks for closets. …
- Pet supplies.
Is there a standard list of necessities for everybody to follow, or is every person’s mudroom different? How does it make you feel to see other people’s mudrooms?
If your house was on one of those HGTV shows with an open floor plan, what would be in your mudroom area that isn’t there now? Would you consider moving some stuff from another room into your newly designated “mudroom” area now that you know where it is supposed to go?
What do you think about when you see pictures of other peoples’ mudrooms?
Do they inspire feelings of jealousy, greed, lust, pride… What are they and how do they affect our thoughts or actions?
Think about these questions, or don’t. Doesn’t really matter to me either way. Just realize that I’m going to talk about mudrooms now, whether you are thinking about them or not.
I recently moved into a new house with my husband and kids, and the opportunity presented itself for us to make decisions on how we wanted things laid out in our home. This included putting an actual space aside for a mudroom area! Exciting stuff, huh?!
My previous house had very little storage space – just enough cupboard/closet/pantry space for the bare minimum of necessities – so this mudroom idea is truly revolutionary for us! We have made good use of it thus far considering the small size of the area, but I know it will be even more awesome when we can actually move all of our stuff into it.
I’m not sure if everyone has a personal section in their home that they refer to as a mudroom- -specifically- but for us, this is truly the only place where our outdoor clothing and shoes are stored. Obviously, since living here, we have accumulated more than just boots, coats, etc., but these are still the main items stored here because this is the first place people come into the house from outside so this is where we need to store our outerwear… right? Well at least for now until I decide otherwise!
So although you might expect to see things like dog/cat supplies (food & litter), toys, sports equipment, and bikes in a mudroom area, we don’t have any of that stuff. We do have some other miscellaneous items in this space but these are not necessities for us just yet because we don’t need them on a daily basis.

Of course, there is always the possibility that our mudroom will evolve into much more than just an outdoor clothing storage room as time goes by and we become more comfortable here so I’m sure it will be quite different next year or even next month!
But since this has been such a new and exciting change for us (and one I had really wanted to happen) I thought I would share with you what we currently have in our mudroom area:
- Coat hooks for everyone
- Shoe storage for everyone (since we are a family of 6, I didn’t buy the expensive-looking cubbies that were available – who knows if/when all of our kids will be living here so they wouldn’t necessarily need their own separate space)
- A bench for putting on shoes and boots… most times it’s easier to do this outside so they will probably stay out there most days! But when it is raining or snowing heavily, this is the most practical place to bring them. I also wanted an area where my kids could put on their “outside” shoes before they changed into their indoor shoes because in past years when we had no mudroom space, I would just set their boots by the door and they would usually forget to put them on before going outside. Now that they have a designated space, I can almost guarantee you will never see their boots by the front door because as soon as they come in from being outside, they know just where to go to put them away.
- A Rubbermaid container with hats, mitts, and scarves… as well as an extra winter jacket for my older son – this one doesn’t fit him anymore so it’s not getting much use but at least this way it is still being stored somewhere practical instead of empty hanging from a doorknob!
- Winter accessories season isn’t over yet so those are all still out right now (see #4), but once those are put away, we will then store our summer outdoor equipment there as well. So basically the only things that will be stored in this area during the winter and not summer/spring/fall seasons is snow blowers and snow shovels.
