How much space is needed for a dining table and chairs?
For every person at your table, you should leave enough space for 24 inches. Most chairs are 16” wide or 24” wide with armchairs being 30″.
In order to accommodate a dining table and chairs, you will need space for the size of the table and at least 4 feet on all sides of it. This is not including guest movement around the tables, but just enough room for your dining set. The actual seating area should be able to accommodate two people sitting across from each other and allow some type of aisle or walkway down either side.
You will also want to leave an open pathway between your closest chair and the wall so another person can still get by easily if needed. A traditional 6′ eight-person wooden table with four standard-sized armchairs on each side would require at least 12′-0″ x 16′-0″ which equals 192 square feet of floor space (requiring a minimum of 10′-0″ x 16′-0″ or 160 square feet of unobstructed floor space).
A round table with 4 standard-sized armchairs on each side would require at least 11′-6″ in diameter and 16′-0″ in circumference which equals 191.5 square feet of floor space (requiring a minimum of 9′-9″ in diameter and 14′-9″ in circumference or 144.5 square feet of unobstructed floor space).
The dining chairs should have some sort of base where the chair meets the ground so they don’t sink into your carpeting, but not be clunky like most bar stools. The seat height should be such that when you sit down your knees are slightly bent and your feet are flat on the floor.
The back should be at about a 90° angle (if you lean your chair all the way back it should not fall or tip over). Armrests can get in the way sometimes but having one or both will allow for comfortable seating, so choose accordingly.

The dining table itself may depend on what other activities you do in that room.
If you plan to play board games with family members then consider an oval/round table that is big enough to fit game pieces without them falling off often. You generally want the width of the board game to be able to be played comfortably at arm’s length away from either side of your body without requiring much movement around the table while seated.
Traditional rectangular tables are always a safe bet for most people. Chairs can vary from ones similar to your dining table chairs to cafe style with a low back and no armrests. Alternatively, you might consider having one or two comfy recliners in that room as well, but keep in mind it takes away seating if you have guests over unexpectedly.
If the dining set is going into a room where there will be frequent dinner parties or gatherings it might be worth looking at stacking chairs or bench/stool seating as they are less expensive than traditional chairs and may make more sense financially if bought in bulk.
If this space will also become your new media/entertainment area then having some ottomans around the seating area could prove useful in keeping them closed up when not in use.

Keep in mind though that “custom” furniture may not always end up fitting perfectly and may require some modification or alterations to make it fit right or look right in your furniture layout. Remember with hard furniture like wood if you return it they usually only take back a set amount of money off the bat which means unless they have an identical piece on sale at their store the rest will have to come from your pocket.

What is the difference between a 6 seater rectangular table and an 8 seater?
A 6 seat rectangular table usually measures 3m in length and 1.5m in width. Meanwhile, an 8-seater one can be as long as 4 meters and 2 meters wide! The only difference aside from the size is that there are fewer extensions on the 8-seater dining set due to its size.
There’s quite a big difference.
For starters, a standard-sized rectangular table (6 seats) is about 3m in length and 1.5m in width, while those that can fit up to 8 people tend to measure around 4m by 2m.
The only exception would be those with detachable legs or those with removable leaves as these can be extended or reduced in size to suit your needs.
If you have plenty of space, go for a bigger 8-seater one!
Alternatively, if you’re tight on space and need to save as much as possible, grab a 4-seater option instead. Just make sure that it fits well within the room or area where you’ll be using it.
The ideal 8 seater dining set should measure at least 3mX2m – this allows enough space for people from both sides of the table to walk around freely without disrupting others while simultaneously giving everyone sufficient elbow room. This might not seem like much but most standard 6 seat rectangular tables come at around 1.5mX3m, which is too cramped to be comfortable!
If you have an 8-seater dining set, it should measure 3mx2m – this leaves plenty of room for people on both sides, while still providing everyone with enough elbow room. Most standard 6 seater rectangular tables are only 1.5mx3m so they’re too crowded to be really comfortable!
However, if your space is limited – say if you live in a small apartment or have a smaller family – there are 4 seat sets available too. It all depends on what you need and how much space you have available. Just make sure that the table fits well within the area where it will go before checking out.
