Although the standard sizes above are the most common, there’s nothing to stop you from ordering any other size that you want. You can also have several different windows covering types in one window if need be. For example, cellulars on the bottom half and roller at the top. Or a combination of vertical and panel design etc.
The only thing to keep in mind where the cord mechanism is concerned, for roller blinds, cellulars, and wooden blinds, is that you should leave a minimum of 7″ between the bottom of the window covering and the window sill.
This is purely so that there’s plenty of space for blind operation without any damage to furniture etc. It also ensures better worm operation as well.
For vertical blinds, this distance can be reduced by 2-3 inches as they operate straight up and down rather than sideways as the others do.

Vertical blinds are far more simple to operate when the mechanism is considered. They only go up and down, rather than both up and down along sideways as in roller and cellular blind installations.
There’s no need for a cord wire track mechanism so they’re easier to install than other window coverings. The method of control for vertical blinds is either via a wand or by using a low voltage electronic remote control system operated from inside the room.
These modern attractive looking wireless systems take all the hassle out of operating your vertical blinds by simply pressing a button on the small handheld transmitter which you carry with you around the house, such as in your pocket or purse, etc.
It should be noted that there’s nothing whatsoever wrong with having a vertical blind or cellular blind in the same window covering, so long as they’re not on top of each other.
In terms of cleaning your bedroom windows, it’s preferable to have roller blinds all around for ease of access and general convenience. This way you can just wipe down both sides of the glass from the inside without any ill effects at all.
Verticals also clean easily enough if you have them on one side only, but if you have them fitted across two windows it becomes too much hard work wiping over both sides because everything has to be done by touch alone rather than being able to see what you’re doing.
One final point to note is that ‘decorative’ metal grilles are usually fixed with just two brackets per end. This means that they’re very flimsy and won’t be able to take the weight of a blind, even if it’s just a cellular or roller type.
You should always use metal brackets for this sort of window covering installation to give added security as well as strength.
When all is said and done it’s important to remember not only the functionality of your bedroom windows but also their appearance must be considered too. That’s why there are so many different types, sizes and styles available these days, including the more modern ‘wallpaper’ verticals which look like real wallpaper until you touch them!

(depth of window sill) Here we need to know if this is a rough opening (unfinished), so bear with me as I explain: This is the “inside dimension size” of the actual frame itself. The rough opening, which you would measure from outside your wall and subtract 1/4″. So let’s say your wall was made for an inside dimension of 2′ 8 3/8″.
You would take that number, minus 1/4″, or 2′ 5 9/16″, which will allow room for the window to open in its casing without binding. *It may be helpful to use a tape measure, ruler, yardstick, architectural scale or try a rough opening calculator to obtain your rough opening size.
Take the width of the 2′ 8″, add 1/4′ ‘ for a total of 3″, and go down that many inches from the bottom of the intended window pane. For example: If it’s going into a wall 32″ off the ground, you would take 32″, subtract 3″, and cut it 29 3/16″ up from the bottom. Make a guide line with a sharpie marker.
Here’s why we need to do this: Different walls have different thicknesses, so just because two windows are both 68″ wide does not mean they will fit into each other’s rough openings side-by-side.
In fact, they may not. We must be sure that the rough opening size you have is enough for your window. This is not a finished dimension! As mentioned, this will give you 1/4″ on either side of your window once installed. If you are looking at pre-made windows online, they come in different depths of sills also known as “aprons”.
1′-8 3/4″ x 4′-0″ or 58 3/8″ x 122 cm deep sill (to support the bottom of the window) *Take the width of the 2′ 8″, add 1/4″, and go down that many inches from top or bottom . For example: If it’s going into a wall 32″ off the ground, you would take 32″, subtract 1/2″, and cut it 29 5/8″ down from the top. Mark a guide line with a sharpie marker.
1′-0″ x 4′-0″ or 45 1/8″ x 122 cm deep sill (to support the bottom of the window) Cut along your marked lines right through the middle using a jigsaw, hand saw, circular saw, or skill-saw.
*If you are making smaller windows that do not need as deep of sills to support them then obviously all you would need is something as simple as the depth of the rough opening itself (equal to outside dimension including 1/4″) minus maybe even less than 1″, but still enough to hold its own weight while open; otherwise your window will be useless until you build a window box or reinforce it in some other way.

How do you measure blinds for a bedroom window?
This is a question we get asked quite often and it’s an important piece of information to know when ordering your new blinds. If you order the wrong size your blinds will not function properly, and this would be frustrating to say the least!
So here at Window Blinds Direct we want to make sure our customers measure their windows correctly, so that they can receive their samples, then place an order for exactly what they need.
How do you measure window blinds?
There are actually two ways you could go about measuring your blinds: The first way you could (and probably should) get out the tape measure and get all scientific with it – measuring in cm & mm. Then simply sit down at your computer with all your measurements, and place an order.
The second way is what we recommend for most of our customers – easy & simple!
So here’s how to measure blinds for a bedroom window: First, just take out the handheld measuring tape (the long one that you use for sewing or whatever), then stand on a chair in front of your window sill/frame. This is where you’re going to be placing the new blinds.

Next, simply hold the tape measure up against the frame of your window, starting at one side about 1cm from the top. Make sure you press firmly on both sides of the tape measure, so it doesn’t slip away from you as you are holding it up against your windowsill or frame.
Now use your other hand to hold the tape measure in place, so it doesn’t move. Keep holding, and now slide the measuring tape down to the bottom of your window sill.
While you are sliding the measuring tape down to the bottom of your window sill, inch (2cm) by the inch (2cm) write down on a piece of paper any markings that you see.
If there is no marking then just keep moving your measuring tape slowly downwards without writing anything down – don’t try to guess or estimate! Next, plus 1cm onto whatever number you’ve written down. For example, if you wrote 18 then add another cm to that = 18+1= 19cm. That would be how tall your blinds’ header rail should be – 19cm.
