Are Kitchen Appliances Standard Sizes? Kitchen appliances are an important part of most home kitchens.
But with so many different sizes and types available, it can be difficult to know what will work best for your cooking needs.
This blog post will help you find the perfect kitchen appliance size for your space by providing some tips on how to choose the right one for you!
The standards of kitchen appliance sizes vary depending on where they’re used in a house or restaurant.
Appliances that are typically found in a residential setting, like dishwashers and microwaves, tend to be significantly smaller than their commercial counterparts because they need to fit into small spaces around the kitchen.
The first step is figuring out what kind of space you have available- whether it’s a tiny apartment or cavernous.
Do you know Kitchen Appliances Standard Sizes?
- Cooktop: usually 30-36″ wide X 2.5-4″ high X 19-22″ deep.
- Wall oven: usually 30″ wide x variable height X 24″ deep.
- Dishwasher: usually 24″ wide X 35″ high x 24″ deep.
- Refrigerator: usually 30-36 “wide x 67-70 “high x 29-35 “deep.
The standard of kitchen appliance sizes has increased over the last few years. It seems like every time I buy a new dishwasher or stove, there is more room than in my old one! This increase in size can also be seen when considering clothes washers and dryers.
The standard width for different types of appliances may vary by manufacturer or country where it’s produced, but this article will give you the measurements that are most commonly used. The American Standard (also known as “US Standard”) has been replaced with the North American Standard (also known as “Canadian Standard”), which takes into account changes in metric measurements. Therefore all measurements listed below are given in both inches and centimeters to allow these machines to fit anywhere around the world.
Some of the less common measurements are also included, such as jumbo machines and compact machines.
Washer Widths
- Standard Single Door Machines: 24″W x 27″D x 33-34″H (60cm x 69cm x 84-86cm)
- Standard Double Door Machines: 30″W x 27″D x 33-34″H (76cm x 69cm x 84-86cm)
- Compact Single Door Machines: 22.5”W X 25”D X 32.5?H (57cm X 64cm X 82cm)
- Jumbo Single Door Machines: 28″W X 27″D X 34″-35″H (71cmX69 cmX87 cm)
Dryer Dimensions
- Compact: 27″W X 27″D X 33″?H (69cmX69 cmX84cm)
- Standard Single Door Machines: 27″W x 29.5?D x 38″-39.5″?H (68cm?x75cm?x97cm?)
- Standard Double Door Machines: 34″W x 29.5″?D x 38″-39.5″?H (86Cm?x 75 cm?)
- Jumbo Single Door Machines: 36″W x 32”D x 41″-43″.5”H (91Cm X 81Cm X 106Cm)
- Tandem Stack Pair Machines: 40″W X 30″D X 54″-55”H (101Cm X 76Cm X 136Cm)
Are Kitchen Appliances Standard Sizes?
Dishwasher Dimensions
- Standard Single Door Machines: 25″W x 23″D x 33″/34.5″H (64cm X 58cm X 84-86cm)
- Standard Double Door Machines: 25″W x 28?D x 33″-37″?H (63cmX71 cmX93-98cm)
- Compact Single Door Machines: 18”W X 23”D X 33.5″?H (45 Cm X 59 Cm X 85 Cm)
- Jumbo Single Door Machines: 30″ W x 32?D x 44″-46″?H (76CmX81C mX112-117Cm)
As you can see, the North American Standard is quite easy to follow. The first number tells you how wide the machine is across its front side (the door side). The second number tells you how deep the appliance is, measured from inside of the cabinet to the inside of the cabinet. The heights mentioned above are all approximations as there are many different options available, but they will give you a good idea of what the machine is going to look like.
Alternative Measurements
In addition to the measurements listed above, there are many other measurements used around the world for different appliances. Here are some of those alternative measurements so that your machines can fit anywhere in the world!
- Front-Load Washer Widths – 27″W x 31″D x 38″H; 28″W X 32.5″D X 38.25″?H; 33″ W x 34″ D x 40.75”H (83cmX82cmX102Cm; 83 cmX88cmX102Cm; 86Cm)
- Top-Load Washer Widths – 27″W X 31?D X 38″-39″.5”H (69cmx78cmx98 Cm?)
- Compact Machines Dimensions – 23?W x 24?D x 36″-38″?H (59CmX61 cmx97-99Cm)
- Dryer Dimensions, Electric – 30.6″W X 29.1 “D X 49-50”.4”H (78CmX74C mX125-128Cm)
- Dryer Dimensions, Gas – 30.6″W X 29.1 “D X 45-47”.4”H (78cmX74 cmx118-122Cm)
- Washer Dimensions, Electric – 27″W x 24?D x 33″?H (69 cmX61 Cmx 83 Cm); 27″ W x 26″ D x 34″.4”H; 28″ W X 28.5″ D X 35″.3”H; 30? W X 25” D X 36″-37″.2”H (69cmx64cmx89 cm; 69cmX70.5C mx 93cm; 73cmX69Cm x 97 cm; 76Cmx 69 Cm X 100 Cm); 31″ W X 27?D X 36″?H (78cmX70 cmx 94 cm)
- Dryer Dimensions, Gas – 27.6″W x 29.1 “D x 51-53”.4”H (71cmx74C mx134-138Cm)
Conversion To Metric Units
To use these measurements in different parts of the world, you can convert them to metric units by following the simple instructions below:
- 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
- 1 foot = 30.48 centimeters
- 1 yard = 0.91 meters
- 1 mile = 1.61 kilometers
- 1 square foot = 0.09 square meters
- 1 US gallon = 3.79 liters.

What are the main large kitchen appliances that are always on the counter in every kitchen?
Major Kitchen Appliances
- Beer & Wine Refrigerators.
- Cooktops.
- Dishwashers.
- Gas & Electric Ranges.
- Freezers.
- Ice Makers.
- Microwave Ovens.
- Ovens.
The main large kitchen appliances that are always on the counter in every kitchen are a microwave, a toaster oven, a coffee maker, a crockpot/slow cooker, and a blender. The other appliances listed may be found in many kitchens as well but those listed here would surely be found in any home or apartment. These appliances can vary from very cheap ones that only do one function to very expensive clunky ones that do everything including baking your cookies and making your toast!-PJ(KW).
1) microwave ovens are usually cheap and small enough to fit on your countertop. They are great because they can cook just about anything from vegetables, meats, and fish to popcorn. If you do not have this appliance in your home it would be a good idea to get one for convenience’s sake!-PJ(KW).
2) Next is the toaster oven which is very similar to the microwave but usually has more features while still being small enough to fit on your countertop. A great thing about these appliances is that they take up very little space but can bake or roast things like chicken breasts or potatoes much quicker than an oven could.-PJ(KW).
3) The next large kitchen appliance that is always on the counter in every kitchen is a coffee maker. This is a great appliance to have in your kitchen because it gives you the opportunity to wake yourself up first thing every morning with a piping hot cup of coffee.-PJ(KW).
4) This next large kitchen appliance that is always on the counter in every kitchen is a crockpot/slow cooker. A slow cooker can cook all sorts of delicious meals from soups and stews to whole chickens or roasts! They are very useful for people who work long hours and cannot spend as much time cooking dinner as they would like.-PJ(KW).
5) The last common large kitchen appliance that is always on the counter in every kitchen is a blender! Blenders are great whether you are making a smoothie in the morning for breakfast or margaritas at night with friends. They can turn pretty much anything into a liquid so you can digest it easily and quickly. Note though that some blenders are better at different things than others so if you are planning on making smoothies for breakfast it would be a good idea to get one specifically for that purpose since they will blend veggies and fruits easier than one might be able to with a large blender.

What is considered a large appliance?
Large appliances include washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers. Small appliances include vacuum cleaners, blenders, mixers, and electric razors.
What are the appliance standards for a Canadian home?
Under the National Plumbing Code, appliances cannot exceed a certain flow rate or water usage. In most cases, this means that high-flow faucets must be installed in order to accommodate large appliances.
What is considered small and what is considered large for an appliance depends on where you are located. What may be a large appliance in one region may be a regular-sized appliance somewhere else. For example: if you live somewhere near the ocean and need to use your dishwasher daily because of the amount of dishes provided by your family, then your dishwasher would not be considered as large under normal circumstances but rather just standard size which can also vary depending on the brand and how often it was used. Although if you lived somewhere in the mountains where you generally only run your dishwasher once every two weeks, then it would probably be considered as a large appliance.
Appliances are products that are powered by electricity or gas to undertake an operation or process. An Appliance is used for doing household work like cooking, washing clothes, etc., especially because of its ease of use and time-saving features. Large appliances can include washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers whereas small appliances include vacuum cleaners, blenders, mixers, and electric razors.

Objects such as dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers can be used in a small and large capacity depending on how they are being used.
The size of the appliance generally refers to its width and depth but it is not limited to this specification. For example, an oven may seem like an average-sized appliance because of its height however it can vary greatly in terms of length and width.

Is a microwave a large or small appliance?
This is a question that stumps even the most seasoned of appliance buyers. In regards to size, microwaves are generally classed as medium-sized appliances, but their ability to cook food with microwave technology makes them quite different from your average blender or slow cooker.
For this reason, many people have more than one name for microwaves: some call it a “microwave” while others prefer a “microwave oven”, and some of us just aren’t sure what you call a microwave at all!
So which is it? Are they large or small appliances?
The truth is they fall somewhere in the middle – depending on who’s doing the talking. But don’t let our indecision about to call them to stop you from enjoying the convenience of a microwave in your home. Microwaves are great for heating up fast and they’re easy to use, so if you have room for one on your kitchen counter, there’s no reason not to add one today!
And when it comes to making a decision about which appliance is best for you, it’s time to ask yourself some questions: Is this a small or large kitchen? Do I have enough counter space left over after I’ve laid out my appliances? How often would I use this appliance?
If you still can’t decide whether a microwave makes sense for your kitchen, it might be wise to go with our best guess. But if you really want to know the answer, feel free to use this guide!
Medium appliances – small kitchen
If your kitchen is on the smaller side, then a microwave oven probably won’t fit well in your layout. This is because microwaves are best-suited for countertops but they don’t do a good job of keeping in the heat when placed inside cabinets or confined spaces. If you’ve already filled up your counter space with other appliances, including your refrigerator and blender, then you’ll likely have difficulty finding room for microwaves too.
Although microwaves are relatively small appliances, very few kitchens have enough extra space to accommodate this kind of cooking appliance. You might want to consider buying a full-sized oven or even an electric skillet instead.

Large appliances -small kitchen
If you have more than enough space in your kitchen, then you should definitely consider introducing one or more microwaves into the mix.
The reason for this is that small countertop appliances are often very underused or used once and then forgotten about on a shelf somewhere. By getting yourself a microwave oven, you open up some new possibilities that otherwise wouldn’t exist with other cooking appliances. This way, when you’re making dinner on Monday night but realize that it’s going to be difficult without having access to the top, you can simply use your microwave oven. And in many cases, microwaves will even provide the same results as a standard oven in less than half the time!
Medium appliances – large kitchen
For larger kitchens with lots of counter space to spare, buying an appliance like a microwave oven is really just a matter of convenience and preference. If your kitchen is so large that you’d never consider cooking in it anyway then we wouldn’t recommend running out and getting yourself a microwave oven.
But if you already have access to other appliances and wish there was one more thing that would make your life easier every once in a while, then microwaves are definitely good options for you! Most people who live in spacious homes think nothing of buying a microwave oven to use on occasion.
Large appliances – Large kitchen
If you already have your full-sized appliances laid out in your kitchen and you can’t think of anything that would be more practical than having another one of the same kind, then we recommend sticking with what’s been working for you so far!
You know exactly how much counter space is available when it comes time to make dinner, which means you’ll know if a new appliance fits without any difficulty.
In other words, if your kitchen is already perfectly set up for microwaves, then there’s no reason not to put yourself in a situation where it’s easy to turn to them when needed.
And besides, everyone could use another appliance to make their lives easier. When you’re having guests over for dinner, think of all the things that could go wrong and how prepared you would be if your oven stopped working in the middle of cooking

Microwave ovens
Now that you know which kinds of kitchens are best suited for microwaves, it’s time to figure out whether this kind of cooking appliance makes sense for your own kitchen! If you’ve never really cooked anything in a microwave then take some time to experiment with it before making any decisions about buying one. For example, try baking something like double chocolate cookies, which can usually only be done in an oven. Once it’s finished cooking, simply compare the results with what you’d expect to see from an oven-baked version of the same thing.
You might be surprised by how well it turns out
When buying any appliance, it’s important to know which ones are most suited for your home and your lifestyle. For some people, microwaves are likely never going to be useful or convenient enough to warrant their purchase.
On the other hand, they might come in handy quite often and end up saving your guests (and yourself) a lot of hassle when it comes time for dinner! The best way to decide is by trying them out on occasion so that you can figure out exactly when they’ll prove themselves worthy of earning a spot on your counter. And for those who are trying to cook many different things quickly, microwaves are definitely the way to go.
What is the most important appliance in the kitchen?
It’s one of the questions we hear all the time and today we’ll try to answer it.
Think about your kitchen and what appliances you can’t live without. Oven and stovetop? Microwave oven? Dishwasher? Refrigerator, perhaps? Coffee maker or tea kettle, maybe?
They all seem like everyday essentials that enable us to get through our day-to-day lives. However, there is one cooking gadget that may outshine them all: The Crock-Pot slow cooker! Hitting the scene in 1973 with its first release; this countertop electronic appliance offers convenience combined with low maintenance cooking for busy families or individuals who work long hours. It also enables you to turn tough cuts of meat into tender, fall off the bone delights.
So maybe it’s not an appliance per se but Crock-Pot is still without a doubt the most important item in any kitchen. Let’s look at some of its features that make this possible:
Unlike traditional crock pots that are made with ceramic inserts, new crock pots are made with stainless steel components making them safe to use on all stovetops including induction cooktops. They also come with locking lids allowing you to take your food anywhere if necessary – whether you’re visiting friends or going camping.
Most crock pots have low wattage resistance which allows for more energy-efficient cooking and uses less electricity or gas when compared to traditional stovetop or oven cooking.
Crockpots are great for busy families or couples living alone since they can cook food while you’re away at work, school, etc., and still, come home to a tasty meal. Simply put all of the ingredients in the pot before leaving in the morning and when you get back 8 hours later everything is basically done!

You simply need to prepare any sides (bread or salad perhaps) and dinner is served. Perfect for preparing side dishes! If you want to prepare mashed potatoes but don’t want to turn on your oven in the summertime, simply place them in your crockpot with some chicken broth or water and let it do its thing. No more hot oven heating up your kitchen during summertime heat waves
If you’re busy, you don’t have to worry about finding time to go to the grocery shop because your crockpot will keep the food fresh for longer periods of time. If it’s 3 pm and you realize you haven’t prepared anything yet, simply use your crockpot to make a meal without fuss! Make delicious chicken soup in about an hour or even prepare short ribs that take 6 hours!
You can use frozen meat with almost no preparation at all too! Simply place the frozen block in the liner and let it do its thing.
Once cooked, break apart using two forks and it’s as if you d freshly cut the meat. Crockpots are highly portable and can go anywhere with you. They also double as serving dishes allowing your guests to choose what they want in their own bowl, which is especially useful when hosting dinner parties or celebrations! You don’t have to worry about getting food on plates either since everything is simply eaten straight from the bowl.
No more dishwashing either, just toss the liner into the trash once everyone is done eating! This makes transporting leftovers easy too. Simply transfer them into a plastic container by removing the liner and popping it inside of your fridge at work, school or even while traveling. Cleaning up after using a crockpot is low maintenance. No scrubbing burnt on food off of the sides of your pot. Simply let it cool before putting it into your dishwasher or washing it by hand with water and soap.
You also don’t have to worry about taking out the insert to wash either since they are all dishwasher safe. Crockpots come in so many shapes, sizes, colors, and functions that you’re sure to find one for any type of cuisine or food you want to make – whether it’s hot dips or cold salads! They also come in multiple sizes too! A large family crockpot is perfect for making big batches of spaghettios while a personal-sized crock pot works great for college students living alone during their first semester away at school.

How much space is needed behind a refrigerator?
The height of the space behind a refrigerator is usually not as important as width and depth. The drawings shown here indicate minimum clearances for different types of refrigerators, but it may be better to have more clearance than less. Refrigerators that back up against a wall should draw air from a room or closet that does not open into a kitchen or utility area.
Some homeowners find this desirable because there is then no cabinet where odors can collect. If no such sealed-off room is available, it is better to provide an opening in the kitchen wall rather than one leading from some other room since there will often be no outside ventilation near the area where appliances are installed. Also, the door of a cabinet opening into the kitchen is likely to be opened more often than one in some other area.
Minimum space requirements are generally governed by the exterior dimensions of the unit – usually, depth-first, then width. For example, most household refrigerators have either an 18″ or 22″ wide compressor compartment on top so their depth dimension usually governs minimum clearance requirements, since it cannot be placed flush against a wall.
However, some models have their compressor on the side which allows for easier installation in shallow spaces. Check your model’s manual for details. The “height” requirement refers only to the distance from the floor to the top surface of appliance – not necessarily total height with doors closed, etc., although that may affect required floor space as well as rear clearance. In general, however, if floor space is limited one may have to settle for less rear clearance than shown in the drawings on this page.

What about more efficient appliances? Do I need a larger air return/exhaust requirement?
Refrigerator efficiency has improved significantly over the past decade so energy usage requirements have gone down accordingly. And it’s important to note that these reduced requirements apply only to no-load energy consumption – current models still require some electricity at start-up and while running.
There are some new high-efficiency models that use little or even no “standby” load power, but they can cost quite a bit more upfront and most homeowners don’t have access to those types of units.
But there are a few things you can do to make your existing appliance more efficient, and they won’t cost much upfront or in the long run.
First, make sure it’s not overpacked with food – this is a common problem as people fill their refrigerators to capacity rather than periodically emptying out old stuff.
The less food you have in there the less overall energy the unit has to use for cooling those contents instead of just maintaining the temperature inside. And that means savings on your electric bill as well as prolonging the life of the compressor and seals – no one wants leaks!
Another way of saving money on electricity is by using cold water for ice cubes instead of making them from refrigerator-cooled water – seems simple enough, but many people don’t think of it. And if you have a front-opening door type, make sure the seal around the door is properly seated – if not air will escape every time you open that door.
Last, but not least, how are your coils? Coil fins can accumulate dust and lint over time which reduces their cooling efficiency, so periodically vacuum them clean to keep airflow at maximum velocity across them for best performance.

What about room size requirements for freezers?
Since most household freezers are much smaller than refrigerators they tend to have lower height requirements due to less volume to cool – usually about 3′ minimum clearance for an upright freezer with a rear-mounted compressor compared to 4′ or more for a top-mount refrigerator.
Their width requirements are usually not less than the exterior dimensions of the unit if it opens front to rear, or 18″ for any other type – both very standard measurements.
The compressor compartment should always be installed on top if possible since that’s where you’ll commonly find existing exhaust ductwork in older homes. And again, remember to not overpack your freezer with too much food – this is just as important in a freezer as in your refrigerator!
If you’re installing both a refrigerator and freezer make sure they have separate doors because some models come with only one door to open them both at the same time which can cause all kinds of problems when opening either one.
If you already have such an arrangement check your manufacturer’s recommendations – they may allow it if both units are well within the stated requirements, or they may recommend you add a second door for each one in order to avoid damage due to thermal expansion and contraction caused by large temperature fluctuations.
Before purchasing any appliance check with your local utility company – there may be rebates available from time to time that could save you hundreds of dollars on energy-efficient units.
Conclusion
A good kitchen appliance should be able to provide the user with a lot of flexibility. The size of an appliance is not always indicative of its quality, but it can help you make your decision easier based on what space you have available in your home or apartment.
